MUNICH - Back To My Roots
When I used to live in Germany as a child, I often visited Munich with my parents. I was very much looking forward to a weekend in my homeland after so many years.
So off we went on the 6:55am flight with Lufthansa (ja!) from Heathrow for three days of fun and bringing up all of that childhood nostalgia.
I got us a room at The München Palace on Trogerstrasse. It’s a beautiful boutique hotel in a perfect location just a short walk away from the Englischer Garten and Maximilianstrasse.
The rooms are stunning, very cosy and comfortable. I can highly recommend room 064 which has a beautiful terrace, not to mention great bedding, fluffy towels and the service is absolutely impeccable with lovely staff. It was totally my interior design style, and when Molton Brown amenities are in the bathrooms I’m like... when can I move in??
When we arrived we did a beautiful walk in the sun to the Englisher Garten. Directly in front of the lake we ate at the Seehaus. Excellent food and the view is just breathtaking.
Just next to Seehsaus you can rent little boats and pedalos... really worthwhile if the weather is on your side.
We walked so much on the first day (almost 12km) and I feel it’s the most beautiful way to discover the city.
Stop for a little coffee or aperitif at Tambosi just on Odeonsplatz which is absolutely beautiful. The architecture in Munich is breathtaking.
On the first night I booked us for dinner at Käfer. It’s such an institution and a must-see when in Munich. Food is excellent and such a beautiful place with little “Stuben” in different decors.
Käfer is just opposite our hotel so we also went the next day to stroll through the amazing shop they have with the lunch brasserie and terrace. The food is heaven ! It’s all just so pretty !
A stroll on Maximilian Strasse is worthwhile for its beauty and high-end shops. Very chic ! I got myself these amazing ankle boots at Valentino...
Grab a coffee at Roma or even book there for dinner. It’s a very “in” place and the interior design is pretty cool. Best club sandwich I have ever had in my life ! And best Schnitzel I have ever eaten... and that’s a BIG compliment coming from a German.
On Saturday we had an amazing lunch at the well-known Franziskaner, just opposite the Opera House. This is the ultimate German food experience. Note: this is not the moment to cut out gluten here... the bread is to die for.
The coffee and dessert just next door at Dallmeyr is a MUST and a walk around this shop is a treat for the eyes. It’s the Fortnum & Mason of Munich and a real institution.
We had the chance to go to the Anne Sophie Mutter’s open-air concert on Königsplatz. Amazing night listening to Star Wars soundtracks, Schindler’s List and Harry Potter. Breathtaking !
Munich is packed with art and culture and it’s worth booking a ticket in advance for a concert or an opera if you fancy.
After the concert we had a late dinner at our hotel... I know I keep saying it, but (shocker) the food was mind-blowing. You must eat once at their restaurant...the menu is German delikatessen which this fraulein fully endorses.
Munich is listed as third in the cities that boast the best quality of life and I must say it’s true. It is also rated as the world’s most liveable city and I couldn’t agree more.
Danke Munich ! You have been great and I will definitely be back at Christmas, a season where it’s apparently magical there.
