The Hair Truth
My hair has been quite a problem in the last 2 years and I really wanted to share some of my issues (and solutions!) with you. I never actually took care of my hair because I had healthy hair all my life. I mean… not the Brigitte Bardot “chevelure” but still!
Blonder Days
I’m usually always blonde with some ridiculous screw ups every five years (went to red two years ago and then back to totally dying it back blonde and then back to my initial brownish colour).
The change of colours and doing blonde roots for a long time might not have helped but my hair issues are mainly due to hormone imbalance and they can just turn into a shocking mess overnight (see Hormone blog in my wellness section).
When I came back from vacation last Summer it was a total disaster and my hairline was all broken and I looked like a poodle. So I had no choice other than to dye my hair back to my initial ash blonde/dark brownish colour. Coming out of the salon I already knew that this was going to be a horror trip and a long way back to healthy hair!
Going back to my dark is... not #whatsarahloves. I basically had no more hair in the back due to breakage. I didn’t feel like myself anymore and it really affected my confidence.
It took me months and months of treatments with the Matthew David Hair Salon. We were on a mission and my hair was getting seriously more healthy every month. I was really happy and actually it looked back to nearly normal in the first weeks of quarantine.
Fuller hair after months of patience
Three weeks into lockdown I felt I had a huge hormonal crash and seriously overnight my hair in the back literally disappeared. Frankly pretty scary to see such a change within a few days and I was really shocked and worried.
Post blow-dry at home. No need to say that this is a shocker.
I tried Olaplex for a while and it didn’t work for me. It’s not bad but it wasn’t making the huge difference that I needed. So many people swear by it but it didn’t bring me any results.
Solutions
I discovered Iles Formula and had an amazing chat with the Owner of the company who talked me through her products and how to apply them. Hallelujah! From the first day I used it, my hair was starting to soften again and was shiny every time I washed it. Applying conditioner & hair serum only made it better and better. I had never heard of this brand before!
I also started to add the mask into my regime which is recommended to be used two to three times a month.
At the same time I used the Kerastase Densifique cure with one application at night on the scalp. They aren’t giving it away, but I really felt like it helped with growing your hair back and treating the roots. I’m very consistent with it- a three-month cure is recommended for optimum results.
I’m also planning on a Mesotherapy treatment for the scalp at The Mayfair Practice once we are allowed to have treatments again. It’s apparently very effective for hair growth.
I started taking Totally Derma too because that was recommended to me by Time To Bloom and I’m looking forward to seeing if this collagen supplement helps. Supplements work on a long term basis so it’s too early to have an opinion on that one.
I definitely will skip the blonde dying in the future and only stick to some highlights instead. With hormonal issues it’s just not the same hair quality anymore (adios to my 30-year-old hair!) so I just need to accept that and be more gentle with my colouring. I’m also realising that taking care of my hair is just as important as taking care of my skin- it’s very necessary now.
